There were eight victories, five second-place finishes and four third-place finishes for Bainbridge Island at the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association boys state meet last month.

In other words, the Spartans were dominant en route to their first state championship in six years.

Bainbridge finished third at last year's 3A meet—3A includes the middle-sized schools in Washington when it comes to enrollment classification. The 1A/2A meet features smaller schools.

Bainbridge won all three relays, starting when the team of Sota Inoue, Ryan Rich, Ian Letson and Bradley Roloff won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:38.83.

The team of Aidan Cole, Roloff, Hayden Ludwig and Elias Dean won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:28.92.

In the 400 free relay, the squad of Dean, Letson, Inoue and Cole clocked a time of 3:14.04 to win.

Cole was the sprint freestyle king, winning the 50 free in a time of 21.17 and the 100 free in a time of 46.50.

The other individual standout was Pullman senior Jake McCoy, a Tennessee signee who first became a 4-time champion in the 200 individual medley, winning with a time of 1:47.79.

McCoy then won the 500 free for the first time at the state meet in a personal-best time of 4:29.07.

Pullman junior Nolan Pollestad won the 200 free in a time of 1:46.94, improving greatly from an 11th-place finish last year. His time was a personal best by more than four seconds.

Other individual winners were:

  • Sehome junior Kaden Schmidt won the diving event with 280.75 points, winning by 45.7 points over Josiah Seals of Lindbergh.
  • Bainbridge junior Sota Inoue captured the 100 butterfly in a time of 52.41, which was a personal best by 45 one-hundredths.
  • Leland Hilgers of Bainbridge won the 100 backstroke in a time of 55.71, signaling that he should be a fixture for Bainbridge in the future.
  • Bainbridge junior Ryan Rich won the 100 breaststroke in a personal-best time of 58.27, which was a 1.78-second improvement over his previous best time.
