Damascus Girls Hold On Late, Poolesville Boys Roll At Maryland 3A/2A/1A Meet

The girls meet came down to the last event, while there wasn't as much suspense for the boys at the Maryland 3A/2A/1A state meet last month.

Maryland 3A/2A/1A is the smaller of the two enrollment classifications for swimming in Maryland.

The Damascus girls won their second ever state title, winning the 400 free relay to hold off second-place Poolesville by 8.5 points.

The Poolesville boys won their third title since 2020, using depth to win going away despite winning only one individual event.

GIRLS' RECAP 

Damascus held a 2.5-point lead over Poolesville going into the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Hannah Douglas, Gabrielle Petrousky, Taisiya Ivanovskaya and Viona Sunjaya sewed up the team title by finishing first in a time of 3:41.14, more than a second ahead of Poolesville.

Damascus also won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:50.52 behind the team of Claire Beabout, Sunjaya, Samantha Hennelly and Douglas.

Sunjaya, Hennelly and Ivanovskaya also produced big points individually.

Sunjaya, a sophomore, won two events, taking the 200 individual medley in a personal-best time of 2:07.01 and repeating as champion in the 100 breaststroke with a personal-best time of 1:03.69.

Hennelly, a junior, won the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:00.18, besting her previous personal best time by 1.86 seconds.

A sophomore, Ivanovskaya repeated as champion in the 500 free in a time of 5:10.41.

Poolesville's team of Sophie Huang, Christine Wang, Lilian Congdon, Veronica Mitin won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:41.25.

Other individual winners were:

  • Rockville sophomore Maeve Cutter won the 200 free in a personal-best time of 1:56.16, swimming 1.8 seconds better than her previous personal best.
  • La Plata senior Jadyn Woolsey won the 50 freestyle in a time of 24.01 to repeat as champion in that event.
  • Quince Orchard junior Elise Pantezzi won diving with 361.80 points, just 32.5 better than runner-up Avery Clare Moffitt of Bethesda Chevy Chase.
  • Easton junior Madalyn Weems won the 100 free in a time of 53.13, coming in .42 seconds ahead of Douglas.
  • Owings Northern senior and Grand Valley State signee Carly Damon won the 100 backstroke in a time of 59.82, which was a personal best by .06 seconds.

BOYS' RECAP

Poolesville won two relays, starting when the team of Christian Iavarone-Garza, Ethan Qian, Isaac Soles and Eli Ferrara won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:37.91.

In the 200 freestyle relay, the squad of Ethan Lee, Anson Ye, Jaden Hou and Ferrara won in a time of 1:27.90.

The other victory for Poolesville came in the 100 breaststroke, where Quian, a senior, improved on a fifth-place finish last year by winning the event this year in a time of 58.57.

The 400 free relay was won by La Plata's team of Landon Abelende, Jackson Donnick, Alexander Myers and Clinton Cupples in a time of 3:16.89.

Cupples and Rockville junior Brig Barnett each won two events individually.

Cupples won the 50 free in a personal-best time of 1:56.14, eclipsing his previous best by 1.23 seconds. He later improved on a second-place finish from last year in the 100 butterfly, winning in a personal-best time of 49.20, a time that was 1.27 seconds better than his previous best.

Barnett won the 200 free in a time of 1:42.16 and later the 500 free in a personal-best time of 4:35.24.

Other individual winners were:

  • Rockville sophomore Deren Akselioglu won the 200 individual medley in a personal-best time of 1:56.14, which was 1.23 seconds better than his previous best.
  • Walt Whitman senior James Skipper won diving with 450.95 points, just slightly more than eight points ahead of Dylan Imirowicz of Bethesda Chevy Chase.
  • Kent County senior Henry Martinez won the 100 free in a time of 47.37, which beat his previous personal-best time by .78 seconds.
  • Owings Northern freshman Albert Zaidi made a nice state meet debut, winning the 100 backstroke in a time of 53.22.
