First look 2025: The all new adjustable Mizuno M.Craft X putter – is it a gimmick or does it work?
A few years ago adjustable putters became all the rage.
I once drove down the motorway to meet a man I'd met on the putting green at a tour event who wanted to show me his new factory.
Turned out it was a bit like his garage.
The putter he unveiled was rather like a 1980s toy spacecraft but you could tweak it in any manner of ways.
I was quite taken with it for a while but isn't that often the way with putters? They're somehow the most faddy of all your clubs. You fall in and out of love with them very quickly.
I was soon back to something more conventional.
But this year Mizuno have released the 2025 Mizuno M.Craft X putters which promise to bring adjustability bang up-to-date.
Here's the lowdown on what's on offer…
What can you change?
Weight has often been a factor in these types of putter and that model I used years ago was best in being able to adjust for fast and slow greens with the addition or reduction of weight.
The M.Craft X is no different. It has 7, 14 and 21g on offer.
But there's something else – you can change the entire head.
Hang on, what?!
Well, it's not entirely true. The forged face, constructed from 1025 steel, remains a constant. It is a CNC milled face which is receptive and already common.
But the back of the head can change – you have three options, all of them in the mid-mallet range.
Is it straightforward to change?
This is a good question. I sometimes wonder if placing adjustments in the hands of amateurs is a good idea – by our very nature we don't know what we're doing.
But this is an easy change and, unlike irons and woods, at least with putters we can feel somewhat more confident with the changes we make.
What is the benefit?
One simple tick in the box is this: we've all felt like our putting has gone stale and want to change putter. It might be putting the blame on something other than our stroke or reading of the green, but we've also experienced the bounce factor of a new putter.
With the M.Craft X you've got that option in one club.
What are the three options?
First up, Mizuno say of the backs: "The milled aluminium back provides lightweight stability and improved MOI (Moment of Inertia), enhancing forgiveness without compromising the tactile experience."
There is Four which has a square look, Five which is curved and Six which offers more depth.
Is this really the future?
Why not? Sometimes a good idea looks a bit silly on first outing but the second time around the technology is stronger. That might well be the case with adjustable putters.
