Should Cody Rhodes Turn Heel & Sell His Soul To The Rock? | Question Of The Day

Welcome to another eWrestlingNews Question of the Day!
On SmackDown, The Rock cut a long-winded promo where he didn’t say much of anything other than a vague idea that he wants Cody Rhodes to be “his champion” and that he doesn’t want the WWE Championship, but Cody’s soul. The Rock wants an answer (to whatever that question is) at Elimination Chamber.
Without obviously knowing anything of what this is supposed to entail, the onus is on us as fans to just run rampant with speculation and fantasy book our own ideas, for better or worse, and either be surprised at something cool happening that we didn’t see coming, or disappointed that it all fizzles into something awful.
My question for you today is “Assuming this is at least teasing a heel turn for Cody Rhodes for WrestleMania 41, do you think it would be a smart decision for WWE to turn The American Nightmare into a villain right now?”
Remember to answer with your response in the comments below.
As far as my answer…
You can likely tell by my tone that I thought this was very poorly handled, even for something that could turn into a great storyline. Hell, look at what happened last year with how The Rock and Cody Rhodes had a bonkers segment on SmackDown that at first was awful and ended up turning out well.
If I have the right idea, I’m guessing WWE wants The Rock to be a part of WrestleMania and couldn’t figure out what he should do, so someone along the way came up with the idea of having him in Cody’s corner, turning Cody at least temporarily heel with The Rock being his “advisor” of sorts, and it’ll look great on a poster to have Cody, Rock, and John Cena all together. Cena will be in the position to be telling Rhodes what it means to be a true champion, and that if he’s lost his way by listening to The Rock, then Cena has even more motivation to take the title off him.
If that’s the case, then I’m also guessing The Rock will try to help Cody cheat to win, only for Rhodes to turn that away and be more honorable. Rhodes retains over Cena, sees the error in his ways for a conversion back over to full babyface mode, and fingers crossed the fans don’t hate that and boo the ending of Mania and Cody going forward.
There are worse ideas out there, but I’m also just not a fan of that direction. I’ve been saying that I don’t think Cena/Rhodes is the right call in any capacity, let alone to throw The Rock in there and to try to turn Cody heel, of all people, when a Cena heel turn is infinitely more interesting and a babyface/babyface match will do more damage to Rhodes than any benefits he’ll gain from it. I also think if Rhodes kind of turns heel, then the fans will force a true heel turn upon him, because I don’t think there’s a way to have him beat Cena and piss off those fans and then just go “Sorry I was a dick for the past month. Can I be the top babyface again?” and have people accept that.
Frankly, unless there are some alternative ideas for where this is leading that I just don’t see yet, all possible predictions I have for this angle are skepticism that it isn’t going to just be a bust unless the plan is to truly turn Rhodes into the biggest heel on the roster, but even that is a mistake, I think, when he’s such a good face.
Of course, I’m hoping I’m proven wrong. I never want the product to be bad, as I’m a fan, first and foremost, and I don’t want to subject myself to lackluster entertainment just to say I was right in my cynicism. But for now, I’m looking at Elimination Chamber and rolling my eyes that we’re going to get a 20 minute long promo where The Rock will say basically the same thing again, and it either ends with Rhodes saying “no” and it was a total waste of time, or he agrees and this heads down a road I can’t see a great outcome for.
By and large, no, I don’t think the next step is for Cody Rhodes to align with The Rock, but I’m always willing to see what WWE has in mind.
What do you think? Drop your thoughts below!
