2025 Open Water National/Junior National Championships

The 2025 Open Water Nationals start on Friday with the men's and women's 10k, and there are World Championships spots up for grabs this weekend. The top two swimmers in the overall 10k and the 5k will automatically qualify for the World Championship team, here is the rest of the selection criteria.

There are also National TeamTeam positions available depending on event finishes. You can read the senior team selection criteria here and the junior team selection criteria here.

Spotlighting the women's events is three-time National Champion in the 10k Katie Grimes, who is fresh off her first ever NCAA Championships a few weeks ago. Grimes had a sort of underwhelming meet, earning her lowest event finish in the women's 1650, where she added a little over 30 seconds to finish 13th overall.

She will be competing for Cavalier Aquatics/Piedmont Family YMCA at the meet, the club team many UVA swimmers compete for, rather than her home club of Sandpipers of Nevada, and she is entered in both the 5k and the 10k this year.

Former Sandpipers teammate, and last year's runner-up Claire Weinstein, is also entered in the 10k and the 5k events, and she will also be looking to earn an early World Championships berth.

There are also a host of other NCAA Swimmers entered on the women's side. Mariah Denigan finished 18th in the 1650 for Indiana and she also appears in both the 10k and the 5k. Cavan Gormsen and Sophia Knapp are other UVA swimmers who are entered in the meet, Gormsen is fresh off her own 12th place finish at NCAAs.

Last year's Junior 7.5k winner Daisy Collins will also be making her senior Nationals debut in the 10k at this year's championships.

On the men's side, the top three American athletes from last year's Championships are back this year, two of which are current NCAA athletes.

Ivan Puskovitch was the top finishing American last year, coming in just one second behind Frenchman Axel ReymondPuskovitch also represented the United States at the 2024 Olympic Games in the Open Water 10k where he finished 19th overall.

Dylan Gravely, from ASU, finished 3rd, but as the 2nd American and Trey Dickey, of Texas A&M, was 4th overall. All three men are entered in both the 10k and the 5k events.

Just like on the women's side, the reigning junior 7.5k champion in the men's events is making his first senior appearance in the 5k and the 10k.
