Islam Makhachev invites Demetrious Johnson to Dagestan

Islam Makhachev has utilized his phenomenal grappling and ever-improving striking to cement his status as the best pound-for-pound mixed martial artist on the planet.

However, in a testament to his mentality, he isn’t resting on his laurels, and is, instead, pushing himself further than ever, recently training with Demetrious Johnson, to improve his game.

As it turns out, the lightweight champion has been a fan of ‘Mighty Mouse’ for years, having watched in awe as the flyweight GOAT produced an array of epic performances.

During a recent appearance on Johnson’s YouTube channel, he invited the now-retired athlete to come and visit his homeland.

Makhachev said: “One of my best fighters, it’s you, because I always watched your fights, and when you come to the gym, everybody loves you, and they are all big fans.

“That’s why I want to invite you to my country in Russia in Dagestan. You are a very big star there, because all the kids are watching MMA. You can come with your family and bring everybody.

“We tried to invite Daniel Cormier for the last ten years, he always says, ‘I will come’ and then after it’s ‘My daughter has gymnastics, my son has something’, he never comes.”

Islam Makhachev warns UFC legends they must get his permission to use 'pound for pound' podcast name

With Makhachev currently the best in the business, he’s fired a cheeky jibe at two superstars of the game.

The pair of former UFC champions in question host a podcast entitled, ‘Pound for Pound’.

With that in mind, the 155-pound title-holder claims they need his say so, if they want to continue with that name.
