Sean O’Malley has promised to make a major change going forward as he plans for his return to the UFC summit.

The divisive former bantamweight champion lost his belt to Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 306, and is currently working towards an octagon comeback. He is a fan favorite for his fight style, but also has his fair share of critics for his outspoken style.

Now, he is eyeing up a major change to his plans as he looks to make his return to action in the early part of 2025.

Sean O’Malley announces plan to delete social media before UFC comeback

One key element of Sean O’Malley’s success has been his ability to engage with fans on social media to help improve his star power. Of course, his striking ability and knockouts over the likes of Aljamain Sterling have helped, but he is also one of the biggest stars in the sport thanks to his online antics.

However, he has declared via Instagram that he plans for 2025 to ‘detox’ from the internet, and will delete his apps in order to help prepare for his upcoming fights. "2025 l am deleting all my social medias off my phone until my next fight," O'Malley wrote on his story.

"My team will be running my socials. We will still make content but I just need a detox from my phone. Going to focus on reaching my full potential as an athlete and a father."

Sean O’Malley next fight could be for world title

According to veteran MMA manager Ali Abdelaziz, O’Malley may end up being the next contender after UFC 311 when Umar Nurmagomedov takes on newly-crowned champion Merab Dvalishvili. The Georgian seemed to be unsure about given his unbeaten rival a shot at the belt at all, preferring other fights.

But he has succumbed to the UFC and agreed to the fight, with a date set for January. And should the result go against him, Abdelaziz believes that Nurmagomedov will give O’Malley an opportunity to gain the belt back next.

"I would like Sean O'Malley to do this; take as much time as he wants off, and I believe Umar will beat Merab, and after, then Umar will give him a title shot coming off a loss,” Abdelaziz told ESPN MMA.

"I think Sean O'Malley is one of the biggest stars in the sport, this is a business about making money and I think Sean O'Malley deserves a title shot coming off a loss – do you know why? Because Sean O'Malley makes everyone in the division money, not Merab and not Umar yet."
