Logan Paul felt he was on the cusp of a historic boxing upset against Floyd Mayweather during their unprecedented clash in 2021.

Logan Paul and Floyd Mayweather competed in a one-of-a-kind boxing clash in 2021, in front of a multi-million viewing audience worldwide. The fight took place right in the middle of the COVID-19 global pandemic, giving well-versed and casual fight fans supreme entertainment and a distraction from the chaos.

Due to the exhibition nature of Paul vs. Mayweather, a victor wasn’t announced after the eight-round fight. But many still debate how the fight should’ve been scored had the matchup been booked as a professional boxing match.

In the opening minutes of the fight, Paul quickly gained confidence when he appeared to land a clean right hand to the undefeated Mayweather’s jaw. After landing the punch, Paul threw technique and precision out the window as he blitzed Mayweather with a swarm of wild punches.

While Mayweather didn’t fold, Paul believes he was on the cusp of putting the all-time great out cold in the first-round exchange.

Logan Paul pressed to knock out Floyd Mayweather after Jake Paul screamed ringside

During a post-fight episode of the IMPAULSIVE podcast, Paul opened up on his early swarm against Mayweather and his mindset during the barrage.

“In the first round, I got him with a good shot,” Paul explained. “After the barrage in the first round, which…something came over me. I hit him with a right, he dropped a little bit, and in my head I go ‘I think I just got him in a sensitive spot!’. And I heard [Jake] go ‘He’s hurt!’…out for a split second, and I thought I knew what to look for…

“Unloaded the clip, no skill, just pounding away. And when it happened, I’m in my head going ‘I think I just wobbled the greatest fighter of all time!'” Paul continued. “Hit him with an uppercut, and every 1 in 5 punches would get in or hit him in the back of the head. He was so hard to hit! And he had to respect that I came to fight.”

While there was mutual respect between Paul and Mayweather in the moments after their fight, things quickly turned hostile as Paul accused Mayweather of stiffing him financially. As of Oct. 2023, Paul is insistent he hasn’t been paid the previously agreed-upon figure for the Mayweather fight.

Floyd Mayweather and Logan Paul plot boxing returns in 2025

After their fight, Paul made a bold claim about Mayweather’s punching power, claiming fellow influencer KSI hit harder than the boxing Hall of Famer. Paul didn’t return to the ring until a clash against Dillon Danis last year, winning their professional matchup by disqualification.

Mayweather retired from professional boxing after a 2017 fight with UFC superstar Conor McGregor. After leaving the pro scene, Mayweather remains active in exhibition bouts, most recently facing John Gotti III in August.

Paul and Mayweather are both expected to return to the ring in 2025. A next opponent for Mayweather is unannounced, as of this writing, and Paul was recently linked to a potential clash with McGregor in India.

A source in Paul’s inner circle recently told Bloody Elbow that the McGregor fight is in preliminary talks, confirming McGregor’s post to X on Tuesday. As for Paul vs. Mayweather, a future rematch is certainly possible, but Paul may opt for a more calculated approach for Part 2.
