Demetrious Johnson gets submitted at IBJJF World Masters Championships

Blessed with an unrivaled fighting IQ, Demetrious Johnson has cemented his place as one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time.

With UFC and ONE Championship belts still glistening on his mantelpiece, the 38-year-old has achieved everything he ever dreamed of.

Now, having carved his MMA legacy in stone, Johnson is reveling in the opportunity to showcase his repertoire of submissions in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Having previously won the gold medal as a brown belt at the IBJJF World Masters Championships, he set out on a mission to do the same again as a black belt.

In a remarkable run, ‘DJ’ won his first three matches, dazzling the crowd with his formidable moves. However, with his crowning moment closing in, he had to go head-to-head with Tomoya Yanagisawa.

From the moment the contest started, the MMA legend looked in trouble, with his opponent almost locking in an arm bar.

But in a testament to his fighting heart, Johnson battled back from the brink, surviving the threat and nearly passing his rival’s guard.

Alas, in the end, Yanagisawa proved too much, eventually locking in the submission that forced the icon to tap.

Ultimately, Mighty Mouse is still thrilled with his performance at the tournament. During a video uploaded to his YouTube channel, he said: “Definitely did more than I expected I would. I really wanted to just get one win in the division because this is my third tournament. First black belt tournament, and I’m happy.

“I just made a mistake, I should of forced the takedown but it’s very hard because it’s not about athleticism. It’s more of a strategy.”

What happened when Demetrious Johnson and Kade Ruotolo clashed on the mats?

On September 6 at ONE 168 inside the Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado, Kade Ruotolo will go toe-to-toe with Mikey Musumeci in the biggest submission grappling match of all time.

In a battle that pits two of the greatest Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners of all time against one another, both men will have to utilize every ounce of intelligence they have in order to solve the puzzle the other man is bringing to the table.

With the big day rapidly approaching, Ruotolo decided to spend some time training with Johnson.

In an exclusive interview with Bloody Elbow, he revealed what happened when they put on the gis and went head-to-head on the mats.
