Horses seem to always be at the center of Brent and Sharilyn Gasaway's life. As the story goes, the day Brent proposed he ran late because, of course, he was at the racetrack. Even though she was none too pleased, Sharilyn confirmed the end result was an affirmative one.

By now you have probably heard how their ownership group 4 G Racing–which includes the couple and their twin son and daughter, Brent's cousin Lance Gasaway, and Daniel Hamby III–paired with Valley View Farm to reach one of the apogees in the sport of horse racing when longshot Mystik Dan (Goldencents) won the GI Kentucky Derby last year.

According to Sharilyn, it's the horses and the partnerships associated with them that keep her and Brent coming back.

“I had never met Banks [Mystik Dan partner Daniel Hamby] until we won the [GIII] Southwest [Stakes] at Oaklawn,” she said. “We're getting ready to take the picture and all of a sudden here he comes. He had been in a hotel room watching the race and he was busting down there to get in the photo. It was just a great moment.”

With a small broodmare band and with Mystik Dan accepting an invite to the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream, Sharilyn sat down and talked to the TDN about continuing dreams, the realities of breeding to race and which horse she wishes they had not passed on.

MA'AM, 12, Colonel John–Lady Siphonica, by Siphon (Brz). To be bred to Into Mischief.
This business, as everyone knows, is full of ups and downs. We got Mystik Dan out of our mare Ma'am who's been the best and 4 G owns a third of her while Lance and Banks also own the same piece. When she did not meet her reserve at Fasig-Tipton November we were happy to keep her.

Sadly though, back around Thanksgiving, she lost her Into Mischief foal. We've never had any trouble with her. I don't know what caused that to happen and it was just horrific.

Ma'am hadn't had a year off. After all kinds of tests that we had run, they didn't find one thing. Everything happens for a reason, so we've got her back on the books with Into Mischief.

MI FIORI, 13, Congrats–Shoo In, by Dynaformer. To be bred to Flameaway.
4 G's Mi Fiori, who I just fell in love with and used to hang out in my backyard, already has a turfy pair in SW Crown Imperial (Classic Empire) and SP Reining Flowers (Midnight Storm).

We went with Flameaway this time around and she lost the baby. We were very late in the process, so we sent her to Rood & Riddle and they did a full scope. She had a little pocket that wasn't getting cleaned and that was the issue. The procedure went well and we have her back on the register to return to Flameaway.

Randy Gullatt at Twin Creeks helps me pick stallions and if we go to the sales. We're only going to spend so much money on horses because we are breeding to race. That's what we do. So I'm not trying to breed them into something to sell. Flameaway has a strong track record already and Randy advised us that returning to him was the thing to do.

SOUTHERN GRAYCE, 7, Liam's Map–She Be Keene, by Posse. To be bred to Cyberknife.
Her name is Southern Grayce, G-R-A-Y-C-E, because I like to change names up. 4 G owns her down the middle with Lance. So she's great. Last year her Take Charge Indy colt was her first foal in late April. We tried to get her to Cyberknife and we were pushing it at the end. We're going to send her back to him. Our partner Lance picked that stallion. He loves to do research and nicking.

Lance and his dad [Clint], who recently passed away, would go to a sale, and then he would call and ask, 'Do you want to go in?' You never know when he is going to call, so you have to be ready. It's funny, Lance did that same thing with Wells Bayou (Lookin At Lucky), but he called my husband instead of me and my husband passed. With my background in finance, I think I must have been complaining about expenses.

So, Wells Bayou wins his debut at Keeneland under Brad Cox and the colt is accidently wearing our silks instead of Lance's. Of course, he goes on to win the GII Louisiana Derby. I'm like, can we be in on him now? But we missed the boat!

MATERIAL WITNESS, Constitution–More Than Beauty, by More Than Ready. To be bred to Goldencents.
Material Witness is a mare that 4 G owns outright once we bought out Twin Creeks when she retired from racing. She is a Constitution filly. And so we are going to send her to Goldencents, who has been good to us with Mystik Dan. Finances were a reason there, but he's not super expensive. Sometimes when you have good luck in this business you go back and try it again. Randy said that he really thought it would be a good match and we agreed. So he helped get that together with our friends at Spendthrift.
