One of the sport’s leading promoters Hearn gives further insight into the big news in Turki Alalshikh and Dana White’s TKO Boxing League.
Speaking to Fight Hub Hearn gave his analysis on what he perceived as some elements that do not need to be fixed in the sport:
“Well, we’ve known about it for a while—I think it’s been about a year since the conversations started. The last three months, we’ve just been waiting for it, really. I think, you know, there were a couple of comments from His Excellency and Dana White that probably rattled a few feathers and cages in the boxing promotional and governing body world. For me, I’m pretty relaxed, really. I think it’s very exciting. Anytime someone like Dana White and TKO want to move into the sport you’re operating in, it shows you where the sport’s at. I disagree with Dana and Turki that boxing’s broken—I think boxing’s actually in a great place. It’s always been in a great place, but it has peaks and troughs. Boxing’s always been hot, but His Excellency has come in, shaken it up, and made it much hotter. There’s another level we can reach. Does that come from a team or league structure? Maybe. I mean, look, TKO has the ESPN contract from Top Rank, it looks like, which is a big plus for them. They’ve got a huge business and promotional voice. So yeah, I want to see more about the league. I don’t know if we’re involved or whatever, but I do know we have a great relationship with Dana. We’ve got big plans for a Times Square event that we’re doing, Riyadh Season events, fighters on the card, etc. But we have a huge business—we put on over 35 shows a year globally and have huge TV contracts. We were fine before Riyadh Season, and we’ll be fine after Riyadh Season. But what we love is Riyadh Season. I love working with His Excellency, and I love the opportunities it’s delivering for the fighters and the sport. I expect that to carry on for some time.”
Alas, boxing is in a much better place since Turki Alalshikh and others came into it.
Just look at the fights that have been made over the last year or so that would not have been made other wise.
What a year it has been but this is just the beginning — the future is big success and it beckons for the sport.
So many fights there is almost not enough time in the day to keep up with them.
The future is bright for boxing.
The key to a lot of this will be broadcasters and networks working together which will be crucial in the next, big phase for professional boxing.
Don’t discount some new players in that aspect coming to boxing as well.
Look at Channel 5 in the UK only last night showing Mick Conlan, Harlem Eubank and others on free to air television to a big audience in the UK.
Netflix are going to properly get into the sport at some point too, that is a real game changer.
They dwarf everyone in the streaming world and are only going to get bigger as a company as time goes on, Netflix, they are a powerhouse that are only getting started in professional boxing.
Other new, large organizations will come to the sport too.
