'Couldn't finish a Sunday roast' – Jack Catterall beats Jorge Linares, but Josh Taylor ruthlessly mocks him

Josh Taylor taunted Jack Catterall on social media, despite his win over Jorge Linares on Saturday night.

Many felt the English super-lightweight contender should have been crowned undisputed world champion when he challenged Taylor for his world titles last year, but the king retained his belts in a massively controversial decision.

Catterall has since pursued a rematch and remained on the comeback trail by outpointing former three-weight world champion Linares, now 38.

The fight began with a tentative couple of opening rounds which saw little landed between the two men.

As they are both competent counter-punchers, the pair were hesitant to commit, instead waiting for the other to make a mistake.

Linares emerged with a small cut due to a head clash in the second.

Round three was similarly uneventful, though Catterall was beginning to have success with his straight left hand.

Linares attempted to be more offensive in the fourth, which suited the Brit.

Taylor was unimpressed as he tweeted a series of laughing emojis.

Catterall then made a big breakthrough in round five as he hurt Linares for the first time in the fight.

A solid left hand sent the Venezuelan staggering backwards and he even put his hand on the ropes to reassert himself.

Catterall attempted to pursue a stoppage, but the bell came at the right time for Linares.

As they hit the halfway point, the veteran recomposed himself, but was beginning to fall behind on the scorecards.

Catterall’s dominance continued into the second half.

He piled the pressure onto Linares and appeared to hurt him twice more at the ends of rounds seven and eight.

The crowd began to boo though as there was a feeling Catterall could finish the fight if he launched these attacks earlier in the round.

Taylor took to Twitter again and posted, “What a glamorous display!”

At the end of the ninth he added: “38 years old. Lost his last four fights: Great [display] though. So impressive.”

Catterall saw out the victory in the final few rounds and was crowned the winner by unanimous decision with scores of 117-111, 116-112, 116-112.

However, it was not the statement stoppage victory he would have been hoping to secure.

He called out Taylor for a rematch in his post-fight interview regardless.

Taylor reacted: “38 year old, lost his last four fights, couldn't finish Darragh Foley but, it's a great win! Couldn't finish a Sunday roast.”
