What are the scenarios for Group B?

Here are the updated scenarios for Group B ahead of the final set of matches.

Canada

The host team has the inside track to winning Group B, and playing a third-place team in the Round of 32.

Canada will win the group with a win or draw against Switzerland. The goal differential advantage looms large here.

Canada will finish second in the group if:

  • They lose to Switzerland and Bosnia and Herzegovina loses or ties against Qatar, or
  • They lose to Switzerland, Bosnia and Herzegovina beats Qatar, and Canada wins the tiebreakers against Bosnia and Herzegovina

Switzerland

Switzerland needs a win over Canada to win Group B. A draw against Canada means they cannot win the group, thanks to Canada's goal differential advantage.

Switzerland will finish second in the group if:

  • They tie Canada
  • They lose to Canada, and Qatar loses or ties against Bosnia and Herzegovina, or
  • They lose to Canada, Qatar beats Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Switzerland wins the tiebreakers against Qatar

Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina can finish second in the group with a win against Qatar, a Canada loss to Switzerland, and Bosnia and Herzegovina wins the tiebreakers against Canada. They are eliminated with a loss to Qatar.

Qatar

Qatar will finish second in Group B with a win against Bosnia and Herzegovina, a Switzerland loss to Canada, and then Qatar wins the tiebreakers against Switzerland.

What about the tiebreakers?

As mentioned above, tiebreakers may come into play here. So is how tiebreakers work at the World Cup this year.

If two or more teams in the same group are equal on points following the group stage, a three-step process will be followed to determine tiebreakers.

In the first step, the greatest number of points in the group matches between the tied teams will be applied. Then, the superior goal difference from the group matches between the tied teams will be applied, and finally, the greatest number of goals scored in all group matches between the tied teams will be applied.

If that cannot determine a tiebreaker, then the teams that are still equal will advance to step two. In this stage, the first step is the goal difference in all group matches, then the greatest number of goals in all group matches, and finally the highest team conduct score (relating to yellow and red cards) will be applied.

If that does not break the tie, then the teams still equal on points will be ranked according to the most recent FIFA World Rankings.

That first step, which reads "greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned" according to FIFA, effectively turns into a head-to-head tiebreaker in the case of ties between two teams.
