Jason Day knows that in the world of golf, you can ultimately take care of yourself with your play.
Sunday marked the first day of June and the final of thsi year's Memorial Tournament. Officially being able to say it is summer is a lot of fun, that is one of the signature parts of the Memorial after all.
On the subject of the Memorial and the word signature, the annual gathering at Jack's Place served as the seventh Signature Event of the PGA Tour season. The lone one that remains is the Travelers Championship later this month. Time is really flying.
Part of the idea behind these signature/elevated events is that they would gather the best people in the world and do so at iconic venues like Muirfield. Missing them is difficult for Tour players, something that Jason Day touched on with me in a conversation on Monday morning.
Day did not play in this year's Memorial as he is nursing a wrist injury and wants to do all he can to get right for next week's U.S. Open. Sometimes you have to make tough decisions like that. Missing the Memorial hit him just a little bit more than most though as he is a member at the club and an Ohioan. But again, tough decisions have to be made.
Beyond Day's personal connection to the Memorial he missed out on a Signature Event as noted. These come with more stout fields as mentioned which means that they also come with larger purses and more potential FedExCup points. Missing them can be costly which can wear on a player.
What I particularly admired about Day's disposition in this sense was that he still holds confidence in his own game and ability to control his destiny. That's the spirit of golf.
Jason and I spoke on Monday which was fitting in that it was Golf's Longest Day with so many people across the country looking to qualify for the U.S. Open. Putting and and trusting matters within your own hands is the path that golfers must forge and Day noted that as long as he plays well in the events that he is able to play in, things generally take care of themselves.
Consider that Day finished inside of the top 10 at this year's Masters, he tied for 8th, his best finish in a major since his T2 at The Open Championship in 2023. It was his best finish at Augusta specifically since 2019 when he finished T5.
To date Jason three other top 15 finishes on the season besides the Masters: The American Express (T3), AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (T13) and Arnold Palmer Invitational (T8). Two of those are Signature Events in Pebble Beach and the API. He is a man of his word in that he is capable of elevating, no pun intended, his own game when the circumstances call for it.
As a man of strong conviction it is no surprise that Jason Day has a partner like TruGreen. There is no doubt that Day has seen some of the best grass and care for it that the world has to offer, and some of that is in his own yard thanks to TruGreen.
The folks at TruGreen are called into action when people are serious about taking care of their lawns, sort of like how Jason calls himself into action when the most important events of a given season demand his best.
Up next for Jason in that sense is the U.S. Open at Oakmont. I wouldn't bet against him.
