2025 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championship

Last night at the 2025 DII NCAA Championships, Jacob Hamlin annihilated his own 1000 freestyle NCAA record, coming in six-and-a-half seconds under the previous record time.

MEN'S 1000 FREESTYLE — TIMED FINALS

  • NCAA DII Record: 8:53.99 – Jacob Hamlin, Tampa (2025)
  • Meet: 8:54.10 – Fabio Dalu, McKendree (2021)

Top 8 Finishers:

  1. Jacob Hamlin (Tampa)- 8:47.23 **New NCAA Record**
  2. Cedric Buessing (Indy)- 8:48.18
  3. Luca Alessandrini (Nova S'eastern)- 9:00.29
  4. Paul Demesy (West Chester)- 9:01.47
  5. Christian Davidson (McKendree)- 9:01.98
  6. Rafael Ponce De Leon (Tampa)- 9:02.41

In January, Hamlin swam 8:53.99 in the event to break the previous record by just over a tenth of a second. Last night, he made that record look like a stroll in the park when he went 8:47.23 to win the event in the final.

Hamlin, a sophomore, swam the event at last year’s NCAAs where he finished 3rd at 8:58.32. His swim tonight marks an 11 second drop in just one year in the event.

Indy senior Cedric Buessing finished 2nd in a time that was also significantly under the previous NCAA record, touching at 8:48.18, less than a second behind Hamlin.

Before Hamlin broke the record, it belonged to Fabio Dalu at 8:54.10.

The biggest difference in splits came in the first 500, where Hamlin was almost four seconds faster than his previous best time. He was consistently faster throughout the entire race, though, with only one split (400 yards) coming in slower than the time he went in January.

Hamlin still has the 200, 500, and 1650 yard freestyles to compete this week. He is the top seed in the 1650, the 2nd seed in the 500 (though Buessing is ahead of him and is reportedly dealing with some illness leading to him missing the 400 IM final), and 4th seed in the 200 free.
