Garry vs. Prates took place April 27 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo. Ian Machado Garry (15-1) and Carlos Prates (21-6) squared off in a key welterweight contest. The fight aired live on ESPN2 and ESPN+.

Round 1

Prates out in southpaw, Garry in orthodox. Garry in purple with Prates in black shorts.

Very tepid start from both men, testing the waters with a few kicks — Prates low, Garry to the body. Both circling in the center, just reading things out.

Garry misses with a high kick behind a right hand. Then lands a right hand glancing as Prates came in and he stepped off the angle. 2 minutes in and next to nothing substantive has happened.

Garry again tries the 1-2-headkick combo and Prates sees it. Then Garry shoots a takedown from far out and Prates stuffs it with ease. Not a great attempt from Garry.

Prates lands a body kick as Garry went up top and got blocked. Prates cutting the cage now, trying to hunt Garry down. Garry again with the 1-2 head kick and blocked. Then reaches for a single that goes nowhere.

60 seconds and anybody can take this round. Prates coming in more aggressively now and they collide but break. Garry with another high kick that's blocked. He's busier, even if most is getting blocked.

Prates cutting the cage but not pulling the trigger. Garry with a body kick. Then lands a left hook up top as Prate threw a kick. That sends Prates to the canvas and Garry stands over him with some nice ground shots before the bell, solidifying the round.

Round 2

Prates right back to the center to start this round. He has to think he lost that round after the finish.

Garry counters a low kick with a combo nicely. He's winning the engagements thus far, as few as they may be. And Garry snaps for a single-leg but Prates defends and then shucks it off. That was a good attempt from Garry but better defense.

Prates cutting the cage but can't get Garry along the fence line, and very little offense so far. Garry putting kicks down the center line and his jab. He's out-working Prates right now. Just misses a big right hand that Prates ducks.

Garry with the head kick that nearly lands. Prates might be getting a little frustrated in there, starts messing around with his hands. He swings hard and Garry slips them both. Now Prates grabs a clinch and puts Garry along the fence, but he breaks out.

Garry keeps kicking and Prates keeps not doing that much. Good jab lands for Garry as well. And a NICE right hand from Garry catches Prates stepping in. Opens a cut under Prates's left eye.

Prates is really struggling with all the options Garry is presenting. Garry shoots, Prates defends, nearly goes to ground, but they're back up with 60 seconds left.

Garry steps in with the jab and Prates gabs a clinch. Elbows for a break. Garry nearly lands the head kick again and follows it with a combo. Garry starting to feeling himself in there, mixing everything up and looking like the better fighter in all phases.

Round 3

Prates needs to pick things up this round. He needs more offense. But Garry takes the center to start things this round, and they trade kicks to the body.

Garry with a wild Tekken combo that misses. Prates' defense has been strong tonight. But Garry keeps trying and Prates isn't.

Prates advancing and Garry shoots. He gets the leg but Prates showing great flexibility and Garry abandons it. He has not really tried to finish these takedowns, instead just seeing if they happen.

Prates whiffs a head kick and Garry smiles at him. And Garry tags Prates! Nice combo with an uppercut that snaps Prates head!! Prates trying to smile it off but Garry coming forward now. Prates lands a solid left but now Garry shoots a double and he's deep and finishes it. Garry committed that time and got it.

Prates has full guard with 2 minutes. Garry moves him to the fence and stacks to pass. Prates rolls and Garry trying to take the back. Short punches and Prates stands up. Garry holding that waist and making Prates work but Prates turns in and then spins Garry to the fence.

They break after some work and Prates lands a left. He's looking a little slower in there now and Garry just misses a big left hook. Prates really coming forward now and Garry times a beautiful double under the left hand, finishing the takedown. Prates to the fence and stands up but Garry on his back and holds on as the round ends.

Round 4

Championship rounds and Prates breathing a little heavy in there.

More of the same for the first minute. Prates can't find Garry in there and he is mixing his weapons so well. Shoots a double but Prates defends this well though. But Garry keeps giving him things to defend and look at. A single and Prates blocks but Garry shoves Prates to the cage this time and finishes it.

Prates to the fence and his knees, and Garry holding the back. Prates stands but Garry breaks him down again. More work here before Prates can get up and break.

Garry again with the head kick that gets blocked. Garry putting on a clinic in there at this point. The stats are staggering. Prates is barely landing and Garry is landing often.

OH! Big left hand for Prates buckles the knees of Garry for a moment. He's shaking it off and retreating but he definitely got popped there. Prates taking advantage to advance here and Garry playing defense right now. He's bleeding from the nose.

OFF, nasty knee from Prates as Garry gets closed in. Big left hand from Prates! Garry against the fence now and in full retreat. Garry shoots and gets the takedown but Prates right back to his feet. Prates hunting and Garry makes it to the bell. Except Miragliotta may have stopped it early again! Good lord.

Round 5

Garry seems OK now and he has to know he's up on the cards. He just can't get finished. Prates lands a nice body kick early and he is stalking as Garry retreats.

OH! Nice knee from Prates as Garry ducks in. Garry keeps going to the fence now and Prates can assault him there. Garry shoots and misses. But lands a nice right to the body.

Prates still stalking and Garry snatches a single-leg. He forces Prates to the fence and Garry is happy to hold here. Prates breaks and lands a left. Garry's arm might be broke now. Right forearm is real bulgy.

Garry shoots and stuffed. Prates in predator mode but Garry lands a right hand of his own. His movement is still good enough, for now. Halfway point of the round.

Garry against the fence again and this time he lands a right hand as Prates gets to antsy. Garry shoots a takedown, forces a clinch and pushes Prates to the fence. He's bleeding the clock. Prates defending the single and finally gets free. Combo from Garry. He's digging in.

Prates whiffs a head kick. Garry circling away and then firing in. Takedown from Garry but Prates sweeps! That was funky and Prates is in top half. Big ground and pound! Garry hurt!!!! Garry moving away!! Garry crawls to the fence and Prates all over him!

Garry up and shoots. He's in so much trouble! Prates stuffs . Weird transition and Prates on top. Big elbows!!!! Prates has 20 second to put it on him!!!!

Garry against the fence and Prates lets him up. Prates comes after him with short time and Garry evades.
