Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is attached to star as UFC star Mark Kerr in a new movie.
The role is one of the WWE legend’s most ambitious yet. He is playing Mark Kerr in what The Rock called a passion project, and was announced after he was seen after Jorge Masvidal beat Nate Diaz at UFC 244.
This helped grow his passion for the UFC and The Rock agreed to play Kerr in the upcoming film, The Smashing Machine.
Kerr was a legend in the early days of MMA and cementing his legacy as a key figure in the promotion’s history. The Rock went through intense training to get in shape for the role and do the story justice.
UFC fans will be keen to see how Kerr is portrayed by The Rock in the movie and they won’t have to wait long to find out.
The Rock’s new movie ‘The Smashing Machine’ is set to release later this year
UFC fans won’t have to wait long to see The Smashing Machine, as A24 have revealed the release date for the movie.
Deadline reported that The Smashing Machine has been given a release date of October 3, 2025.
This is earlier than most people expected, but the delay of the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic meant that A24 leaped on the chance to release during that window.
That film is being split into a two-partner, delaying the release date and opening the door for The Smashing Machine to release in October.
The film sees Emily Blunt joining the cast alongside The Rock as Kerr, while boxer Oleksandr Usyk cameos in The Smashing Machine as well. Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Bas Rutten, who competed in Kerr’s era, also plays himself in the film.
Mark Kerr thinks The Rock will do a great job with the movie
The man himself is backing the project and thinks The Smashing Machine will be a success.
Speaking with THE HANNIBAL TV, Kerr spoke about his conversations with The Rock prior to making the movie, admitting how much of a great guy he was before production.
“I know everybody says this, but he’s probably one of the most gracious, coolest dudes.
“He said to me, ‘Hey, Mark, I just want you to know this is an honor for me to do this—to take this on and put everything I have behind it to make it the best possible production and movie that I can.’
“It’s just something that I really believe I can do a great job with. Everyone involved, I think, will be happy with the final product.”
The Smashing Machine is directed by Benny Safdie, whose work in the movie Uncut Gems will have Kerr fans hopefully for a good portrayal of the UFC legend.
