Dana White has admitted the UFC made a major error during Saturday night’s broadcast as they mixed up two major celebrities.

Pound-for-pound boxing superstar Terence Crawford made the decision to choose UFC 306 over Canelo Alvarez’s latest title defence against Edgar Berlanga during a busy evening in Las Vegas. But when he appeared on the broadcast, he was tagged as rapper Kendrick Lamar.

The flub went viral on social media with fans mocking the production team who had been praised throughout the night for their involvement in a memorable broadcast. And even commentator Jon Anik appeared confused as he insisted he was looking at the boxing star.

Much was made of the incredible production team that had been brought in to bring the UFC’s $20million showcase at The Sphere in Las Vegas last night to life for a TV audience. They managed to get across the scale and magnificence of the show, with fans generally impressed.

But despite commentator Daniel Cormier’s regular pleas for the production to win awards such as an Emmy, there was one major mistake at the most basic of levels. During the break between fights, there is a regular segment during major sporting events where celebrities in attendance are shown.

And it was during that segment that they made their key mistake. As the camera panned towards Terence Crawford, who was sitting next to boxing supremo Turki Alalsheikh, the tag underneath claimed that he was rapper Kendrick Lamar, who it appears was not in attendance.

Following an ultimately successful event, UFC boss Dana White appeared happy with his presentation both in the Las Vegas venue and on pay-per-view. The fights in the main and co-main events failed to deliver, but he was otherwise impressed with what had been put on for viewers.

And he ultimately wasn’t too harsh on his team for the error, telling media at the post-fight press conference: “I was talking to Terence Crawford, I don’t want to call him out who the hell did that, that was pretty bad.

“He did kind of look like Kendrick Lamar, though let's not f*** around, he did kind of look like Kendrick Lamar. So when I said we had a flawless production tonight, I take that back, there was one that was bad, yeah!”

Viewers were quick to make jokes, with one writing: “Haha Kendrick finna drop a diss track over this.” Another added: “Lol that's kinda a poor job.” Others theorised that perhaps the UFC were attempting to make light of boxing by misnaming one of the sport’s pound-for-pound greats.

“This is a next level boxing diss by the UFC,” one viewer wrote. “It's not like he's seen as some peoples pound-for-pound number one.”
