In a collision that pitted two of the greatest trash talkers of all time against one another, Conor McGregor and Chael Sonnen went head-to-head in front of an enormous crowd.
Throughout their careers, ‘The Notorious’ and ‘The American Gangster’ have dismantled their foes with not just their fighting skills, but their innate ability to get under people’s skin with formidable mind games.
Conor McGregor and Chael Sonnen go to war in epic trash talk
Since its inception, the UFC has given the world many a great trash talker, with the likes of Colby Covington and Dominick Cruz cementing their places in combat sports folklore.
But nobody has quite handled the mic like Conor McGregor and Chael Sonnen.
Renowned for lines like ‘Who the f**k is that guy’ and ‘Anderson Silva you absolutely suck’, the pair have made the fans laughs and their opponents rage with their brutal yet articulate insults.
Often, they had fighters beaten before they ever set foot in the cage. Alas, with the pair in significantly different weight classes, the chance of them ever squaring off in the cage was never a possibility.

However, in a moment combat sports enthusiasts could previously only dream of, in 2013, the pair met on stage during a fan event to promote:UFC Fight Night: Machida vs. Muñoz.
To make things even better, they were joined by the legendary Michael Bisping, who’s also no slouch when it comes to mocking his rivals.
McGregor is renowned for his snappy dress sense, but it didn’t impress Sonnen, who walked over to the Irishman, took one look at his suit pants, and said: “What are these pants you have on?”
The audience erupted in laughter, but it didn’t take long for McGregor to answer back, taking aim at the American’s brown footwear. He exclaimed: “What are those shoes you have on motherf***er?”
Perplexed, Sonnen answered: “This is what a gangster wears,” to which the Dubliner replied: “They’re talking to me,” prompting the Oregon native to sensationally claim: “I took these from a guy.”
At this point, Bisping got involved, sticking up for McGregor. He said: “It’s part of the rehab, it’s controls the blood flow to the leg.”
McGregor confirmed: “This is European style, my friend.”
Offering some fashion advice, Sonnen beamed: “I’m sure nobody argues with you; you’re a rough guy, but outside of my wife, I’ve never seen these kinds of pants before.”
The Irish phenom concluded: “This is slim line European. These Yanks don’t know how to dress. Those shoes talk better than him.”
Chael Sonnen claims Conor McGregor has ‘humbled himself’
In the years since their battle on stage, McGregor has won two world titles, fought Floyd Mayweather in boxing, and gone on an extremely long hiatus due to a leg injury.
His return was scheduled for UFC 303 against Michael Chandler, but damage sustained to his toe during camp forced him to pull out.
Sadly, despite his pleas to Dana White to rearrange the match-up, the MMA star has yet to secure a rescheduled date.
However, according to Sonnen, he’s ‘humbled himself’ in an effort to get the bout he so desperately craves over the line.
