Despite a spirited effort, McGregor couldn’t fend off his rival, ultimately succumbing to a fourth-round neck crank.

While relatively one-sided, the pair whetted the appetites for a rematch, with Khabib jumping the cage, resulting in an enormous brawl between the two camps.

Consequently, Dana White would’ve loved nothing more than to have made the second fight, but it never materialized.

However, Chael Sonnen has now claimed that had the UFC president done things slightly differently, then he could’ve had another massive event on his hands.

During a video uploaded to his YouTube channel, ‘The American Gangster’ said: "The number they needed to adjust was the weight class… They could have made it 165lbs and done whatever they do there. They could have gone 170lbs.

“They could have gone super fight. They could have done both. They could’ve taken and accepted his belt back and moved him against Conor McGregor for 170lbs… That was the mistake that they made."
