MONTALCINO (c, 4, Take Charge Indy–Upstager, by Distorted Humor), who was named a 'TDN Rising Star' after an authoritative six-length tally over a furlong further Oct. 4 at Keeneland, showed abundant speed from the gate to win in a similar fashion under his regular pilot Jose Ortiz. The winner of his Sept. 1 seven-furlong unveiling at Saratoga was last seen in his local debut Nov. 28 when he was reeled in by the slimmest of margins by the accomplished GSW and millionaire Miles Ahead (Competitive Edge) in the Thanksgiving Classic Stakes. Freshened since, the 1-5 favorite in this field of five controlled the pace from the outset and prevailed by 5 1/2 lengths over Deer District (Oscar Performance). His unraced dam, who hails from the female family that produced Drosselmeyer, winner of the 2010 GI Belmont Stakes and the 2011 GI Breeders' Cup Classic, has a yearling City of Light filly and was bred to Army Mule for this term.
