Lakers' Luka Doncic was "vomiting" all day, per JJ Redick

Game 3 of the Los Angeles Lakers’ first-round matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves was quite the barnburner. But in the end, the Lakers ran out of gas, with Luka Doncic not being his best self in a 116-104 loss that wasn’t as lopsided as the final score line would indicate. Doncic was clearly under the weather all night long, and it led to a substandard performance where he finished with just 17 points on 6-16 shooting from the field.

Now, the Timberwolves’ defense deserves plenty of credit for hounding Doncic and making life even more difficult for him. But don’t expect the Lakers star to struggle this badly for the rest of the series, as he was simply going through a very bad illness that had him vomiting all day long, as per head coach JJ Redick.

“He hasn’t been feeling well for the last 24 hours. I don’t know how much he slept last night. He didn’t feel well last night. His stomach was bothering him. He was vomiting all afternoon. … He’s really under the weather,” Redick said in his postgame presser, via @ohnohedidnt24 on X (formerly Twitter).

It was obvious all night long that Doncic was far from 100 percent, but he deserves plenty of praise for powering through his illness and still playing 40 minutes on the night. Alas, with this Lakers team being very top-heavy, it was always going to be difficult for them to weather the storm that is Doncic being less than 100 percent healthy.

Come the final few minutes of the game, it was clear that the Lakers had begun to run out of gas; LeBron James rallied the Lakers late in the fourth but wasn’t able to impact the game in its dying embers — with Anthony Edwards stealing the show for the Timberwolves.

Game 4 of the Lakers’ series against the Timberwolves will be on Sunday at 3:30 PM E.T. Will that be enough time from the end of Game 3 for Luka Doncic to recuperate from his illness?

That game will be as close to a must-win for the Lakers as it can get; while there have been plenty of 3-1 comebacks in the past, they would not want be put in such a position in their series against the Timberwolves. Doncic will have to put up a herculean effort, and so will LeBron James and Austin Reaves as they will look to avoid being put on the brink of elimination.
