Justin Fields injury: Jets QB suffers dislocated toe after being carted off in training camp

The Justin Fields training camp injury could have been so much worse.
The New York Jets have reportedly survived a major scare in the opening days of 2025 NFL training camp.
Newly-signed QB Justin Fields was carted off the practice field on Thursday after suffering what was initially described as a "lower leg" injury. It was easy to consider the worst case scenario after so many devastating non-contact injuries this year in professional sports. Fortunately, the Jets and Fields have avoided the worst case scenario.
Fields had his toe stepped on during practice. He dislocated the toe, but there's fracture. Initial worries like a calf strain or an Achilles tear were unfounded. This is certainly an annoying injury for Fields, but it could have been so much worse.

He's still undergoing tests, but that's the initial diagnosis. Severity is unclear. pic.twitter.com/lBz6jivGY7
Fields is projected to be the Jets' starter after he signed a two-year deal over the offseason. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears and enjoyed multiple years as a starter before the team landed the No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft and moved on to Caleb Williams. Fields started half the season for the Pittsburgh Steelers last year before being replaced by Russell Wilson.
Hopefully Fields can get fully healthy soon. The Jets are counting on him to have a big season. We'll update this story as it develops.
