What was in the bag for Srixon staffer Hideki Matsuyama's title win at Genesis Invitational

Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama shattered the Riviera record for the lowest closing round by a tournament winner on Sunday 18 February at The Genesis Invitational.

Matsuyama clawed his way back from a six-shot deficit with a 9-under 62 at The Riviera Country Club.

His approach game was on point, highlighted by consecutive shots he dropped inside a foot.

The win was his ninth on the PGA TOUR and makes him the most succesful Asian-born player in terms of tournament wins.

Matsuyama was mostly consistent off the tee but devastatingly accurate with his irons and wedges.

His putting numbers were good but as it has been noted, he had a lot of short putts.

“I’m trying to think if that was the most impressive round I’ve ever seen in person,” said J.T. Poston, Matsuyama’s playing partner for the final round.

“It’s definitely the best I’ve ever seen on TOUR. He had like four birdie putts that were like this — ” (Poston put his two index fingers 6 inches apart). “He hit a couple bad drives, but then recovered nicely and never even really had that long of a par putt. It was impressive.”

The equipment that won the Genesis

Matsuyama uses a Srixon ZX5 Mk II LS driver set at 9.5 degrees of loft. The Srixon ZX5 Mk II is an under-rated club with Matsuyama using the ‘pro-spec’ low-spin option.

He also uses a pair of fairway woods favouring the TaylorMade Qi10 3-wood and the Cobra King RadSpeed Tour 5-wood.

Matsuyama uses a set of forged irons from Srixon with his 4-iron to pitching wedge all coming from the Srixon Z-Forged II irons range.

He uses three wedges from the Cleveland RTX 4 Forged Prototype range which are not available commercially. His wedge lofts are set at 52, 56 and 60 degree options.

Matsuyama also uses a prototype putter from Scotty Cameron with the precise setup of the club not clear.

His golf balls are Srixon Z-Star XVs.
