These gentlemen have discovered that copious amounts of alcohol can be detrimental to your enjoyment of a round of golf.
Some players insist they can pull a round out when hungover or even still under the influence.
However, the truth is this is most probably not the case.
Without getting into the pulpit and advocating for teetotal golf, this isn’t quite the ideal for a relaxing holiday round.
Who drinks the most during a round?
Floridians according to recent surverys which suggest that the state is responsible for the most alcoholic beverages consumed during a round on average. They came in at 4.8 drinks per round.
Texas ranks second with 4.6 drinks each round, followed by North Carolina, New Mexico, and Pennsylvania (together with Nevada and Missouri, which share 4.2 drinks every 18 holes). Utah, having a substantial Mormon population, consumes the fewest drinks each round (1.1), followed by New England mainstays Massachusetts and Vermont (1.6).
Interestingly, even America’s most sober golf states outperform their UK counterparts by more than half a drink every round. Surveyors also questioned 1,500 golfers from the UK and discovered that, despite what the galleries at the Open and Ryder Cup seem to imply, drinking is not as significant a part of golf culture throughout the UK and Ireland.
PGA Tour player Joel Dahmen insists the relationship between alcohol and golf is natural.
"You don't have to be an athlete," Dahmen said. "You're not moving around too much and there's a lot of downtime. That's a great time to have a drink."
“Golf presents a unique opportunity for amateurs to drink that doesn't exist in other sports,” Dahmen said.
"You can't go to the bench in basketball and have some beer," he said. "That's not going to make you any better. For some people out there, a couple of drinks makes you a better golfer."
