NEWTON, Kan. — One of golf’s best championship is underway.

The third U.S. Adaptive Open began Monday at Sand Creek Station, allowing 96 golfers with impairments a chance to compete for a national championship. There are eight impairment categories, all awarding prizes to the winners with an overall men’s and women’s winner to be crowned after 54 holes, as well.

The first two editions of the championship were at Pinehurst No. 6, and the next two Adaptive Open will head back East to Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland. It’s one of 15 individual U.S. Golf Association championships being conducted in 2024.

Players compete from five separate yardages ranging from 6,499 yards to 3,812 yards. This is the first year there was qualifying, and there will be a 36-hole cut following Tuesday’s round.
