We’ve all played with those people who simply wouldn’t allow a drop, even if your ball was in a lion’s den!

Tree trunk in front of the ball? Play it where it lies.

Golf has a strict rule book, but when out enjoying a round with your mates, a bit of leniency here and there can make it a more fun playing experience for everyone.

But what if you’re paired with someone who takes to the course with the Official PGA Rule Book poised to read out the ruling?

Well, this crafty and quick-witted trick may one day come in handy.

The late Shane Warne, one of the greatest cricketers of all time and a keen golfer, was known for his trickery and funny sense of humour while out on the cricket field.

While playing a round of golf with one of his best friends and fellow cricketer, Kevin Pieterson, the Australian spinner pulled out a trick for the ages.

Despite playing cricket for rival nations, they were best friends off the field and often played pro ams together.

In 2005, when both were playing for Hampshire and before the legendary Ashes series, Pieterson asked Warne for a chat, to which he agreed with the setting a local golf course.

The pair’s fierce rivalry on the cricket pitch was matched on the course with the pair even through 10 holes. They didn’t want to give each other an inch.

Pieterson, known for his ultra-competitive approach to cricket, was invariably strict on the rules.

Warne struck a shot in front of a staked tree and asked the Englishman for a drop, to which he was predictably denied. But Warne explained: “A staked tree is a free drop.”

The Aussie then spread his stance and tried to set up for the shot before giving up and again asking for a free drop, which he was again denied by the stubborn Pieterson.

Warne persisted. “Are you sure I can’t get a drop?” he asked, a request which was shut down by a defiant Pieterson.

And then the brilliance and wit of Warne was revealed.

Having been denied a free drop on the final time of asking, Warne hilariously stated: “Good! Because that’s your ball!”

In Shane Warne’s style and similar to his bowling, this unbelievable spin and reversal will be sure to be used on the golf course next time your partner gets a little too attached to his pocket rule book.
