Tournament of Champions field features all but two of the 2023 winners

The Sentry Tournament of Champions, which is scheduled to take place from January 4–7 at the Kapalua Resort in Maui, will kick off the PGA TOUR’s Opening Drive.

The TOUR’s Opening Drive, a two-week event in Hawaii, will open on a site that is unique in its artistic design and picturesque surroundings.

The Sentry is the first of eight Signature Events that will take place in 2024. The best players in the game will come together for the Signature Events, where they will compete for FedExCup points and increased purses on legendary courses.

The Sentry brings 39 previous-year event champions to Kapalua’s Plantation Course. The marquee tournament also features 24 players who qualified by finishing in the top 50 in FedEx Cup points, a new addition this year.

Without that twist, Patrick Cantlay (world No.5) and Xander Schauffele (world No.6) would be ineligible for the season-opening tournament. But as it is, only two FedEx top 50 players are not in the field.

Rory McIlroy, who finished fourth in points last year and won the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open, is remaining at home. And, of course, Jon Rahm, who won the Sentry last year as part of four triumphs that included the Masters, has left for LIV Golf.

With Rahm’s exit, Mackenzie Hughes’ position improved from 51 to 50, putting him in line for the Sentry. The Canadian has jumped at the chance to take a trip to Hawaii. Harris English, the 2021 champion, is the most recent Sentry winner in the field.

The 2022 champion, Cam Smith has also left for LIV Golf.
