The interesting bag choices Jake Knapp made for his maiden tournament win

Jake Knapp held onto a third-round lead to win the Mexico Open by two shots over Sami Valimaki last weekend, becoming the third TOUR rookie to win this season – and he did so with a very interesting bag.

When it comes to his long game, Knapp has a pretty orthodox approach barring his choice not to use a 3-wood or 5-wood.

Knapp uses a Ping G425 LST driver and is yet to upgrade to a new offering from the manufacturer.

He deploys a TaylorMade BRNR Mini Driver in place of more conventional fairway woods.

Knapp makes use of a Srixon ZU85 2-iron to bridge the gap between his woods and his regular irons.

From the 4-iron through to his pitching wedge, Knapp uses the PXG 0211 ST range of irons.

His wedges throw another curveball as he deploys a 52 degree wedge from PXG choosing the 0311 Sugar Daddy II for this purpose,

Like many professionals, Knapp cannot resist using a Titleist Vokey Design SM9 56-10S , while his 60 degree wedge is from Wedgeworks, another popular choice.

His putter of choice is the TaylorMade Spider Tour Double Bend variation.

He held his nerve on the greens late on to see himself to a famous victory in Mexico.

"Even though I didn’t have my best stuff (on Sunday), kind of doing it for (my grandfather) and everybody else who has been a part of my team and my family and everything for so long," Knapp said. "Keeping them in the back of my mind and just no quit, no surrender and just grind it out."

With the win, Knapp secured his place in the season's remaining Signature Events and will make his Masters debut in April.

"I jokingly talk about it with (my caddie) and my family when all these people ask me for autographs and pictures and questions and podcasts and all that stuff, it’s hilarious to think two years ago I was working security at a bar and it was a much different scenario in my life," Knapp said.

While skillful play has contributed to his success, good fortune also played a part. The devoted Anaheim Ducks supporter met the NHL side’s executive Tim Ryan and had a chance to play a friendly nine-hole game a few years back. Knapp, and the team forged a relationship, and that commitment was very important during difficult times. The Ducks club president, Aaron Teats, is ecstatic with Knapp’s success on the PGA TOUR.

"We are so thrilled to see Jake's success today and know it's just the beginning for him on the PGA TOUR," Teats said. "Jake and his family have supported the Ducks for years, so we know the hard work and determination he and his family have invested. The Ducks organization is so proud and excited for the entire Knapp family."
