The clubs that powered Rory McIlroy's return to winning at Wells Fargo

We have been closely following Rory McIlroy’s club selection this season given the great interest in what equipment he uses and the lessons the average golfer can glean from his choices.

Of course, the average player won’t have access to things like his TaylorMade prototype irons, but his choice of driver and fairway woods should intrigue players the world over.

McIlroy left the mini-driver out of his bag for the Wells Fargo Championship and opted for a more conventional driver, 3-wood and 5-wood.

McIlroy’s gapping is such that he doesn’t feel the need to use a utility iron or a hybrid in his setup.

His TaylorMade Qi10 driver has been customised slightly with the loft adjusted from the standard 9 degrees to 8.25, a common move among professionals who strike their drives very well.

He has one club in his bag that isn’t from his main sponsor TaylorMade and that is a tour favourite Titleist Vokey Design WedgeWorks 58-degree wedge with K grind.

McIlroy is out to repeat his 2014 win, noting that he won at Qual Hollow that year and that the PGA Championship is back at Valhalla where he last tasted success in Major golf.

"Just need to try to replicate whatever I did in 2014, just try to do that all over again," he said.

"Yeah, I’m feeling really good with my game.

"I need to stay in my own little world next week and not get too far ahead of myself," he added, "but if you can step on to the first tee at Valhalla on Thursday and feel as good about my game as I did today, I think I’ll have a good chance."

McIlroy wants to be ruthless and clinical and has the bag setup that he feels will help him.

"Especially Valhalla, there was like a killer instinct there," he said, "that I’ve maybe, you know, if I’ve been lacking … that I’ve been trying to tap into over the past couple of years."
