Paris 2024: The silver medal-winning bag of Tommy Fleetwood

Tommy Fleetwood had to settle for Olympic silver in men’s golf after coming up agonisingly short of American world number one Scottie Scheffler in a thrilling final round.

Fleetwood was level with Scheffler on 19 under heading into the 17th hole.

However, a bogey after missing the green and overhitting a chip left him behind Scheffler, who carded a course record-equaling nine-under 62.

The 33-year-old Englishman also made a mistake on the 18th when he attacked, and had to settle for a par, which clinched him the silver medal.

“Part of me is disappointed, of course, but at the same time I never dreamed I’d be an Olympic medallist,” said Fleetwood.

“I’m still unbelievably proud and happy of the way the week went. I’m proud of the way I played today.”

He added the TaylorMade Q10 LS driver to his bag earlier this season and Fleetwood has seen that decision bear some fruit.

"The biggest gains for Tommy with the Qi10 comes with really tight spin rates, especially on misses," said TaylorMade Senior Tour Rep Adrian Rietveld. "On misses, Tommy would normally get 3100-3200 spin, on this one he’s getting 2700, which is huge for him because it means the distance is there. He’s still getting a little bit of roll out of it.

"On the flush shots, he’s gone from 10.5 or 11° launch at 2,600 spin, to now at 12° launch at 2,400 spin. When you add that up, that’s a real game changer for him."

Fleetwood accepts that the silver medal is a great honour.

“As a young boy taking up the game of golf, none of us had a chance to win Olympic gold so it was never on our agenda,” said Fleetwood.

“That quickly changes when you’re part of the Olympics and it feels unbelievably special.

“I know I didn’t win gold but standing on that podium with a medal was one of the most amazing moments I’ve had as a golfer.”
