Paris 2024: The gold medal-winning bag of Scottie Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler won gold in the men’s Olympic golf competition by tying the course record in the final round, defeating fan favourite Tommy Fleetwood of Britain.

Scheffler scored a nine-under-par 62 to complete the event at 19-under, one stroke ahead of Fleetwood, who claimed silver.

Hideki Matsuyama of Japan won the bronze medal after finishing joint fourth in Tokyo three years previously.

The Olympic triumph caps off a great year for Scheffler, who won his second Masters green jacket in April as one of his six tour victories for the term.

"When you go to a sporting event, you hear everybody in the stands singing the national anthem, it’s a pretty special thing to be a part of, and I think that’s something we take tremendous pride in," he said of his emotions on the medal stand.

"It was just very emotional being up there on stage there as the flag is being raised and sitting there singing the national anthem. Yes, that’s definitely one I’ll remember for a long time."

Scheffler has become a stronger championship threat since replacing his TaylorMade SS Proto putter with the Spider Tour X Mallet.

"I had tried a Spider during the playoffs last year," Scheffler said.

"It was a little bit of a different type of Spider than the one I used last week. At times last year I struggled lining the ball up in the middle of the face, so I lined the ball up on the toe sometimes, and I struggled with a tiny bit of a heel strike, and that was just — you know, just became kind of my miss. Like if I was fighting a duck hook off the tee, I was fighting a little bit of a heel miss with the putter.”
