Ludvig Aberg says best golf is still on the PGA Tour

Rising star of golf Ludvig Aberg has revealed why he turned down a deal to join LIV including what he called ‘red flags’.

Aberg, who competed in a Major and won his first PGA Tour title in November after playing on Europe’s victorious Ryder Cup team, stated on a Eurosport podcast that he is “super confident” in his choice to play on the PGA Tour as opposed to the LIV Golf League, which is run by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

The 24-year-old said he received the latest LIV offer after finishing his rookie season with a victory in the RSM Classic, where he shot 61-61 on the weekend for a memorable maiden title.

"There were a number of red flags, which is not good,” Aberg said on a Eurosport podcast.

“We realized that I could potentially burn a lot of bridges, and I wasn’t interested in that. When I look back, I am very confident in my decision. I will never chase money; what I do is compete. I did the right thing."

Recent defections have taught us to take all such professions with a pinch of salt. However, Aberg insists that the best competition is still on the PGA Tour.

"I want to play against the best, because I am a competitive person and like to compete against the best players," the Swede said. "Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that at the moment, it's a bit more fragmented."

"When I look at the PGA Tour and the competitions there, there is so much history around all the competitions. And that's what I like, that's what I go for. But then you have to respect everyone's decisions."

Aberg received an invitation to participate in the Hero Dubai Desert Classic on the European Tour in January 2023 after finishing first in the PGA Tour University rankings. After the first round, he was tied for the lead. He took home The Prestige in February for the third time in his career. He participated in the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March thanks to a sponsor exemption and tied for 24th place there.

Aberg became the first golfer to retain the individual championship when he smashed the scoring record in the Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship. He also received the Ben Hogan Award again in May. For the 2023 season, he also took home the Haskins Award and the Jack Nicklaus Award.
