Eight years with TaylorMade means that Rory McIlroy has experienced incredible developments in golf driver technology.

But despite the indisputable enhancements of drivers across the leading manufacturers year after year, there are some gone but not forgotten gems that hold a place in golfing folklore.

The Northern Irishman has the best win percentage on the PGA Tour over the last fifteen years, but he’s had his fair share of ups and downs.

With the constant rollout of new drivers, some will inevitably suit players, and some will not.

Golf is a game of rhythm, and when Tour pros find a driver that is delivering them results they’ll often stick and not twist.

A new driver requires serious testing and will only earn a place in the bag once it’s earned its spot.

With McIlroy and World No.1, Scottie Scheffler, still operating with their TaylorMade Qi10 drivers at the Genesis Invitational this weekend, who knows when and if they will opt for the 2025 TaylorMade Qi35, the manufacturer’s latest technology?

The four-time Major winner and recent AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am champion was asked what his favourite ever driver was by a journalist at Torrey Pines this weekend.

“Most probably the (TaylorMade) M2 driver!” came the surprising reply.

“I stare at it in my garage sometimes, wishing I could still use it – it’s probably illegal at this point”, reminisced McIlroy about his 2017 big stick.

The TaylorMade M2 driver was his first experience with the brand and helped McIlroy to victories at the 2017 Arnold Palmer Invitational and Tour Championship which helped him capture his first FedExCup triumph.

It was famous for its speed and forgiveness, with a flexible speed pocket behind the face increasing ball velocity and distance.

McIlroy has previously said that some clubs simply feel ‘pure’.

And surely he had the M2 in mind.

The highly sought after characteristics of the club also make it popular with amateur golfers. That’s no surprise given its high performance and lower pre-owned price tag that comes with its age in comparison to new market entrants.
