Inside the curious bag of equipment free agent Justin Rose

As a recent equipment free agent, Justin Rose has made the most of his opportunity to become one of the PGA TOUR’s most active testers.

He has no problem trying to get better with any club or shaft or innovation.

For instance, Rose was utilising Cobra irons and an outdated Titleist driver at the start of 2024.

He changed to a Ping driver and Srixon irons for THE PLAYERS Championship in March, but his 2024 modifications didn’t stop there.

Rose’s season hasn’t gone as planned, but when it mattered most, as in the PGA Championship and the Open Championship, he performed strongly, finishing tied sixth at Valhalla and joint runner-up at Royal Troon.

This season, he has only finished in the top 20 outside of the Majors once (tied 11th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am).

Rose has just transitioned to Titleist’s new GT3 driver after utilising a number of different boom sticks during 2024, joining a throng of TOUR players who have made the same move.

He uses a B2 hosel configuration when playing his GT3, which has a standard loft and an upright lie angle of 0.75 degrees.

Rose encircles his Project X HZRDUS shaft’s butt end with lead tape. This contributes to the club’s excellent “counterbalancing.” Although adding lead tape to the grip-end makes the club heavier overall, it lessens swing weight, which makes the head seem a little lighter.

In addition to making the shaft seem a little smoother during the transition, it can help golfers feel a little more connected to the club throughout the swing. Although it isn’t for everyone, average players who haven’t used a counter-balanced driver shaft might want to give it a try.

The former Major winner still plays with TaylorMade M6 fairway woods (15 and 21 degrees), which were introduced to the public in early 2016, even though he now employs new Titleist technology for his driver.

In certain situations, it’s preferable to get comfortable with your gear rather than use the newest models. For Rose, full control over his fairway woods is more important than maximum distance.
