How much will a round at Glendower Golf Club's championship course set you back?

Founded in 1935, Glendower Golf Club currently hosts the Jonsson Workwear Open, a stop on both the DP World Tour and the Sunshine Tour.

Glendower also played host to the South African Open three times in 10 years, beginning in 1989.

The 104th South African Open, won by Morten Ørum Madsen, returned to Glendower Golf Club in November 2013 after a 16-year absence. The tournament was held at the Gauteng club until 2018.

The club enticed the visit of the marquee event with a major upgrade that included building new tee positions and adding a number of water features around the course and reshaping greens.

Not entirely satisfied with these enhancements, the club erected new USGA standard greens and bunkers at each hole in 2007, elevating low-lying putting surfaces such as those on holes 10 and 12.

To protect the abundant bird life at home in the parkland, Glendower Club was declared a nature reserve in 1973, and its commitment in this regard is underscored by the fact that each hole is named after a bird species.

While Glendower Golf Club is a private club, they allow visitors to book a round at the course.

The green fees at Glendower Golf Club vary seasonally, but generally rates are most reasonable in the Adult Weekday slots which apply on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 06:28 to 13:05.

The current green fee for an adult player in the weekday slots is R395, which is approximately $21 or £16.48 (GBP). A cart rental will set you back an additional R450.

The weekend rate is approximately $42 or £33  per round per player, but getting a round over the weekend at Glendower as a non-member would be quite the achievement.

Why play Glendower?

The feature hole of the Glendower course is the 468-yard, par four, tenth.

The 10th hole features a long approach over a large lake to a green with two bunkers on either side of the putting area.

On this course, front pin locations seldom produce pars, let alone birdies.

Water hazards come into play on the par-three third and sixth holes.

The challenge of the course is matched by the beauty of the well-kept Parkland course.

Glendower is frequently rated among the best courses in Gauteng and you’d struggle to find a more visually stunning layout in the near vicinity.

The course offers a stiff challenge to regular weekend golfers with players that are a bit rustier at risk of being given the hurry up on a busy day.

For a special treat book yourself an early morning round at Glendower which is when the course and its Parkland setting really sparkles.
