Delay at Wyndham Championship could mean Monday reveal of top 70 for FedEx Cup Playoffs

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship field won’t be set until the completion of this week’s Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina, an event impacted by Tropical Storm Debby.

The 2024 Wyndham Championship first round was postponed to Friday at Sedgefield Country Club, where receive several inches of rain are expected on Thursday and Friday. While the forecast is kinder for Friday, the National Weather Forecast still calls for rain to be likely through lunchtime and possible throughout the day, only adding more water to a soaked golf course.

With the top 70 in the FedExCup standings making up the only eligible players for the tournament in Memphis, the full FedEx St. Jude Championship field won’t be set until this weekend’s tournament is finished.

The PGA Tour has not yet announced any changes to the Wyndham’s weekend schedule, though the Tour’s website notes an update for the tournament will next come at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday.

As for play at TPC Southwind, the opening tournament of the 2024 FedEx Cup Playoffs is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 15.

Do we know at least some of the names in the field?

Yes, and it includes all the big PGA Tour names. Masters champion Scottie Scheffler will make his first start since winning gold at the Paris Olympics. Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, Colin Morikawa, Hideki Matsuyama, Patrick Cantlay, Ludvig Aberg and Justin Thomas are all comfortably insdie the top 70. Jordan Spieth begins the Wyndham at 63rd, but he should be OK in making the top 70 regardless of result.

What are the FedExCup Playoffs?

After Memphis, the 70-player group eventually cut to 50 for the BMW Championship and then 30 players for the Tour Championship in the final week of August. The Tour Championship winner wins the FedExCup title and a $25 million bonus.
