Yorkshire ahead but will feel they left runs out there
Yorkshire will be disappointed not to have taken a tighter grip on this game as their batters gave up their wickets to some inconsistent Glamorgan bowling, the one exception being Andy Gorvin who finished with four for 67. Most of the batters made starts, but only George Hill really went on. Nevertheless Yorkshire finished with 361 having been put in to bat.
On a pitch that had been prepared to be spinner friendly as the game progressed, it was an interesting decision of Sam Northeast to want to bowl first, although Jonathan Tattersall indicated he would have done likewise. Both sides played an extra bowler, with the inclusion of two spinners.
There was a slight green tinge, but the Glamorgan opening attack did not get any assistance from the playing surface and Adam Lyth and Finlay Bean were untroubled as they took the score to 67. In the process Lyth moved past a 1000 Championship runs for the season. Andy Gorvin then entered the attack and his nagging line and length brought the first wicket, trapping Bean lbw for 23, moving the ball back into the left hander from over the wicket. He then removed Lyth (46) in an identical fashion with the score on 85, but no further wickets fell before lunch, Yorkshire reaching 98.
After his century last week, Tattersall had promoted himself to four and alongside James Wharton they progressed serenely after the break, moving the score to 178. However Tattersall (41) then attempted to pull a long hop from Mason Crane and it somehow ended up in Chris Cooke's gloves. Crane has been Glamorgan's leading wicket taker, but each of his 29 wickets have come at 44.37 and his nine overs before tea went for 57.
Jonny Bairstow (2) became Gorvin's third wicket as he was unable to get on top of a forcing shot and Ben Kellaway took a sharp catch at backward point. Wharton was still there on 59, but he too gave away his wicket, hitting the first ball of a new spell from James Harris into the hands of Timm van der Gugten at long leg, gone for 63. The fifth wicket fell with the score on 194 and George Hill and Dom Bess saw Yorkshire through to tea at 243/5.
The two Yorkshire batters made steady progress in the evening session, Hill given a life having just reached his 50, edging Kellaway between wicket keeper and first slip. Bess then moved to his 50, but next ball he attempted to sweep a full toss from Crane and was adjudged lbw. He and Hill had put on 102 for the sixth wicket. Jordan Thompson (8) was then bowled by Kellaway and Yorkshire were 309/7. Matt Fisher (10) added 29 with Hill for the eighth wicket before he edged van der Gugten to Northeast at second slip. Hill needed 17 for his century, but fell for 90 as he edged van der Gugten to Cooke behind the stumps. Ben Coad (14) was the last man out, nicking Gorvin to Ingram in the slips and Yorkshire were all out for 361, leaving Glamorgan to negotiate two overs.
Northeast and Asa Tribe came out and Northeast inside edged the first ball to the ropes. Tribe played and missed to Fisher, but the pair survived and Glamorgan will start day two on 12 without loss.
