Wayne Rooney has been jokingly touted as a potential teammate by Danny Simpson in a 3v3 boxing match.

The Manchester United legend, who manages Championship side Plymouth Argyle, has been interested in entering the ring.

Rooney revealed earlier in the year that he was in talks with Misfits Boxing but said he was keen to return to football management after he left Birmingham City.

However, his former United teammate Simpson appears to be keen on potentially joining him in a boxing match.

Taking to Instagram before the United legends charity match against Celtic Legends, the former defender posted a picture of him, Rooney and Phil Bardsley inside the Old Trafford dressing room.

“Getting some boxing tips off these 2 legends before our game,” he said in the caption amid the latter two’s boxing history.

Rooney and Bardsley infamously sparred in 2015 and the viral clip saw the former being knocked out by the latter on his kitchen floor.

Bardsley told talkSPORT in February that he’d be willing to fight the England icon again, with a donation being sent to a charity of their choice.

However, Simpson may well be interested in joining them on the same team as he tagged them in his post with a laughing emoji.

He also tagged Misfits Boxing founder and YouTube star KSI in the post, as well as co-president Mams Taylor and co-founders Kalle and Nisse Sauerland.

Simpson made his boxing debut last weekend when he faced YouTuber Danny Aarons in Dublin, with their clash ending in a draw.

It saw him keep hold of his Premier League medal from Leicester City’s incredible title triumph in 2016 after wagering it on a win in the ring against Aarons, who staked gold YouTube play button.

Their clash headlined Misfits Boxing’s sixth event of 2024, with their next coming on September 14 when Elle Brooke fights Jenny Savage.

Although nothing seems to be in the pipeline just yet, Rooney could very well make an appearance at Misfits in the future in what could be a sensational 3v3 clash with Simpson and Bardsley.
