'Stop embarrassing yourself' – Oscar De La Hoya launches into expletive-laden rant about Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez

Oscar De La Hoya has torn into Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez during the most recent edition of ‘Clap-back Thursdays’.

The weekly video series, posted every Thursday on De La Hoya‘s social media platforms, sees ‘Golden Boy’ give his unfiltered reaction to some of the biggest stories in boxing.

Last weekend’s major talking point was Mayweather‘s rematch with John Gotti III so De La Hoya naturally started there.

When Mayweather and Gotti III squared off for the first time back in June 2023, the exhibition bout descended into a mass brawl.

During their rematch, equally absurd scenes played out as Mayweather sacked the referee and replaced him midway through the clash.

"Floyd Mayweather fought in another exhibition against Gotti on Saturday,” said De La Hoya. “A real s*** show that left the crowd booing at the end.

"But in the middle of the second round, Floyd literally had the referee swapped out. He didn't like that the referee told him to stop hitting behind the head.

"Floyd is used to getting away with whatever he wants and he wasn't getting away with it this time.”

Mayweather retired from professional boxing in 2017 with an unblemished 50-0 record but has continued to compete in lucrative exhibition bouts against influencers, reality TV stars and everything in between.

Despite the considerable wealth Mayweather has amassed from his second career, De La Hoya insists it’s not worth the damage it is doing to his legacy.

"It was so embarrassing. Floyd, you’re 50 years old, you're a legend of the sport,” he added.

“I've stood up for you in countless interviews, including Shannon Sharpe's podcast last week but you have to stop embarrassing yourself with these exhibitions.

"I know life is hard and life is expensive but come on man, put your legacy first.

"And it gets worse, your jeweller filed a lawsuit against you in Miami and many are saying you are going to have to sell off your assets.

"I hate seeing this happen, bro. As I have always said, it's hard to make money but it's even harder to keep it.

"Floyd, I'm rooting for you. Come on, let's turn it around."

De La Hoya then turned his attention to Canelo Alvarez, who he has been embroiled in a bitter feud with since their acrimonious promotional split in 2020.

He continued: "My man Turki Alalshikh, is making sure that real boxing is on its way back and he's standing on making the best fights happen which is why Canelo doesn't like him cause he is demanding everyone to fight the very best… Canelo, f*** you."

Canelo and HE Turki Alalshikh had a falling out over a proposed super fight with Terence Crawford.

HE Alalshikh had Canelo vs Crawford at the top of his boxing wishlist earlier this year and even made the Mexican superstar a money-spinning offer.

However, a breakdown in communication prompted the Saudi boxing chief to retract his offer and release a lengthy statement, in which he accused Canelo of being afraid of fighting David Benavidez and Crawford.
