Some big moves are happening in boxing at the moment at the highest level in the sport this being another one.
When Canelo Alvarez first shot to stardom in professional boxing he did so under Golden Boy Promotions when Richard Schaefer was its CEO.
Fast forward years on Schaefer is now CEO of Mayweather Promotions and not many picked up on a short time ago, that he is now in fact an adviser to Alvarez again and on his team.
Speaking a short time ago at the Alvarez vs Scull launch conference Richard Schaefer said:
“Well, it’s a historic event, a historic showdown, live from Riyadh—and very importantly, in primetime here in the United States on Saturday night during the Cinco de Mayo weekend, May 3rd. That was something very important for Canelo, so all you fans out there can keep celebrating this important holiday and watch Canelo become a two-time undisputed world champion. What’s also important is that styles make fights. There are only two countries in the world that actually have boxing styles named after them. One of them, of course, is the Mexican style, which we all love—exciting, coming forward, and so on. And then there’s the Cuban style, which is more defensive and very technical. That’s what you’re going to see. You’re going to see an amazing showdown on Saturday night. It will be history in the making. Don’t underestimate Scull—he’s an undefeated fighter with an amazing amateur track record, and he’s here to win. But Canelo, as always, has other plans, and he will be a two-time undisputed super middleweight world champion. Thank you.”
Alvarez knows that Terence Crawford super fight is on the line in September so if he were to lose to Scull in May, that goes away.
He is too sensible not to take Scull seriously though, Alvarez is a seasoned veteran at this point and knows Cubans are challenging fighters.
A big fight in Latin America too among Spanish speakers, hopefully it is marketed well across Latin America to continue to grow boxing there.
