Leigh Wood brutally knocks out Josh Warrington in stunning comeback after almost being stopped himself

Leigh Wood always delivers exciting fights, and he pulled off yet another stunning victory on Saturday night, this time over Josh Warrington.

With the fight seemingly getting away from him, Wood knocked out Warrington in spectacular fashion in the seventh round of their WBA featherweight world title clash.

It was a lively start to the fight, as Warrington came out swinging immediately from the opening bell, but Wood refused to be overwhelmed, slowing the pace of the fight and he boxed well from the outside.

Warrington was relentless though, as he continued to come forward in an attempt to make it scrappy, but Wood picked him off, catching his opponent on a number of occasions as he tried to close the distance.

At the start of round three, Warrington pushed Wood against the ropes and wildly unleashed hooks, piling on the pressure, but the man from Nottingham managed to stay on his feet and weather the storm.

As the fight wore on, Warrington began to look like the man who had overcome Carl Frampton and Lee Selby in 2018, as he dictated the pace of the fight and opened up a cut above the right eye of Wood and in round five the ‘Leeds Warrior’ appeared to have his opponent hurt.

But, in round seven, with Warrington seemingly well on top, Wood caught his opponent with a vicious combination.

Warrington collapsed down to the canvas and despite bravely making it back to his feet, he was on unsteady legs and the referee waved off the contest, as Wood celebrated.

After the fight, promoter Eddie Hearn teased that Wood’s next fight would be at the City Ground, the home of Wood’s beloved Nottingham Forest F.C.

Meanwhile Wood had this to say: “I beat a legitimate two-time world champion, the fight night was like my career, it started out a bit rough, but I go there in the end.”
