Conor McGregor compares himself to Canelo Alvarez as he calls for Floyd Mayweather rematch

Conor McGregor wants another crack at Floyd Mayweather.

In August 2017, the former dual-weight UFC champion famously crossed over to boxing to take on its biggest star in his squared circle debut.

'Notorious' was outclassed for large parts of the fight before being stopped on his feet by Mayweather who improved to 50-0 in what proved to be his final professional bout.

On Tuesday, McGregor shared highlights from Mayweather's September 2013 win over Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and praised his rival for putting on a truly exceptional performance against the man who went on to replace him as boxing's biggest draw.

The 35-year-old couldn't resist comparing himself to Canelo as he claimed to be open to a rematch with Mayweather.

McGregor captioned the video: "One of the greatest performances in Professional Boxing this was. I landed more shots on Floyd than Canelo. I'd love another go."

The MMA legend did not land more shots on Mayweather than Canelo.

McGregor hit 'Money' 111 times over ten rounds, which was impressive but just shy of the 117 connections Alvarez made during his 12-round bout a few years prior.

The Irishman landed with 26 per cent of his punches and outdid Canelo who only managed to hit the target 22 per cent of the time against Mayweather.

McGregor has always insisted he will return to the ring before his career is over and it's clear to see why as he made $100 million in his boxing debut.

'Mystic Mac' is focused on returning to the UFC first.

McGregor has been sidelined since breaking his leg at UFC 264 in July 2021.

Dana White has booked his return bout against Michael Chandler, but their fight is not likely to take place until April 2024 due to the UFC's drug testing protocols.

Since beating McGregor six years ago, Mayweather has been staying busy and making money in retirement by taking on novice boxers in exhibition bouts.

The 46-year-old shows no sign of slowing down after his last exhibition against John Gotti III, who is the grandson of one of America's most famous gangsters, ended in a post-fight brawl.

Mayweather is expected to return to the ring before 2023 is over.
