Canelo Alvarez insists he is open to facing Conor McGregor in the squared circle.
The former dual-weight UFC star was involved in one of the most lucrative boxing fights of all time against Floyd Mayweather in 2017.
Canelo vs McGregor would pull in plenty of eyes[/caption]McGregor lost the fight via tenth-round stoppage and hasn’t fought under the rule set since.
He has always teased the idea of returning to boxing and it appears the most likely opponent at this stage would be Canelo after their recent back and forth on social media.
UFC president Dana Whiteshut down talk of a potential crossover clash between the pair earlier this week but Canelo is far more open to the idea.
“Yeah, why not? Then we’ll show boxing is better,” he told boxing journalist Manouk Akopyan before delivering his verdict on how it would go down.
“Easy, easy. Very easy money… [I knock him out] at the time I want. One round, two rounds, three rounds – whatever I want."
On Saturday night, Canelo's WBC, WBO and WBA super-middleweight title defence against Edgar Berlanga clashes with UFC 306.
Both events are set to take place in Las Vegas, with Canelo vs Berlanga being staged at the T-Mobile Arena, while Saudi-backed UFC 306 will take place at the innovative Las Vegas Sphere.
White promises the event, which is headlined by a mouthwatering UFC bantamweight title fight between Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili, will be ‘one of the greatest sporting events of all time’.
Yet despite this Canelo doesn’t seem particularly concerned by the competition.
“This is different. Maybe another boxing match, but Canelo is just different,” he told Million Dollaz Worth of Game.
“I don’t care if the UFC is there, when Canelo fights it's different.”
Canelo’s comments in the lead-up to fight night got a rise out of McGregor, who took to X to write: “Canelo is a cornflake. He has about 300k [pay-per-view] buys in him.
“He does not generate nothing near what he seeks to be paid.
“UFC Noche is going to run them from the strip. Sheikh Turki was right moving on. Canelo doesn’t sell.”
Firing back at McGregor’s rant during an interview with Abraham Gonzalez, Canelo said: “He’s helping Dana White to sell for the UFC.
“That’s why he’s saying that, but he knows he’s my son.”
