Boxer Orlando Salido, who beat Vasyl Lomachenko, in police custody in hospital as man dies after truck crash incident

Orlando Salido is in police custody in hospital as a man has died after Salido’s truck crashed into his house.

The former world champion boxer, who famously beat Vasyl Lomachenko, was involved in the incident in the early hours of Friday morning in Sonora, Mexico.

It’s reported that Salido was driving his silver Dodge RAM pickup truck at around 2:30am.

However, he lost control of the vehicle and veered off the road.

This resulted in him crashing through the wall of a house.

According to some reports, he crashed through into the bedroom of a sleeping couple.

A 61-year-old man is reported to have died while receiving medical attention after the crash.

The man’s 53-year-old wife is said to be seriously injured.

Salido too has been hospitalised and is in a ‘serious condition’.

He remains in police custody while in hospital as the Sonora Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the crash.

Salido is a former two-weight boxing world champion.

When he got his first title shot in 2004, he was beaten by the great Juan Manuel Marquez.

Two years later Salido beat Robert Guerrero to claim the IBF featherweight crown, only for this result to later be overturned to a no-contest as he failed a drugs test.

Salido then lost to Cristobal Cruz when they fought for the vacant IBF belt in 2008, but beat him in their 2010 rematch to finally become a legitimate world champion at the fourth attempt.

Following his defeat to Yuriorkis Gamboa, he beat Juan Manuel Lopez to win the WBO featherweight world title and become a two-time champion.

Mikey Garcia beat Salido to take this belt in early 2013, but a few months later it was vacant again.

Remarkably, the WBO approved a fight between Salido and 1-0 Lomachenko for the belt.

Due to his stunning amateur record and two Olympic gold medals, Loma was allowed to fight for a world title in just his second pro contest.

In the end, Salido won the fight in highly controversial circumstances.

He missed weight beforehand, was criticised for dirty tactics during the contest, and claimed a narrow split decision which many fans disputed.

The pair never rematched though and Salido instead went on to win the WBO ‘interim’ belt at super-featherweight before getting upgraded to briefly become the full champion.
