187 British medals in World Masters Athletics Champs

GB veteran athletes excel at the global age-group event in Gothenburg, Sweden, from August 13-24
Just as in the Paris Olympics, the United States topped the medals table with 110 gold, 73 silver and 63 bronze with Germany (79, 66, 58) and Britain (70, 60, 57) completing the top three ahead of hosts Sweden (60, 46, 68).
Britain's 187 medals was a significant achievement with many regular British medallists absent or injured.
However, the multiple gold medal winning performances of the likes of Evaun Williams, John Wright, Kathleen Stewart (pictured above), Sarah Roberts, Mark Symes, Andrew Ridley, Karen Brooks, Ian Broadhurst, Ellie Stevens, Peter Giles and Moira West were exceptional.
M35 men:
Britain won golds in both the 4×100 and 4x400m relay. The 4x400m team of Damaine Benjamin, Craig Cox, Lewis Robson and Dale Willis set a world record 3:16.53. European Masters indoors double medallist Willis had been disqualified from his 400m semi.
The 4x100m team was Isaiah Adekanmbi, Byron Robinson, Cox and Duayne Bovell as they ran 42.35 to take gold from Saudi Arabia and Kenya.
David Proctor won 800m bronze in a fast 1:51.72 and was also second in the 1500m.
South of England long jump champion Paul Ogun took long jump silver while Euro Masters indoor shot runner-up Craig Charlton added to his medal collection with a bronze.
Steve Garratt ran his fastest time for a decade with 53.23 400m hurdles heat and he was just slightly slower with 53.59 in the final.

M45:
Kojo Kyereme, who joins the M50 ranks later this year, just lost out on 800m gold in a dramatic finish and then was involved in another thriller in the 1500m where the top four were separated by a few metres.
Kyereme, who won the European indoor title in the winter, won in 4:10.75 with fellow former international James Thie third in 4:11.09 just ahead of team-mate Ian Williamson (4:11.16).
Britain also took three of the top four places in the 400m led by Gavin Stephens in second and James Colclough in third though were surprisingly out of the medals in the 4x400m in fourth with Ireland winning.
Mensah Elliott won the 110m hurdles into a strong headwind by three metres while Grant Baillie won the steeplechase by less than half a second with Sullivan Smith third.
Tamuononegiye-Ofori Ossai won medals in both sprints.

Joe Appiah won the 100m hurdles in 14.13, four metres clear of team-mate Gary Smith while Mark Coogan won 200m gold in 23.04 a metre up on American Garth Robinson.

Kenyan Francis Kipkoech Bowen set a world record of 14:51.38 in the 5000m while American Brian Tullis ran a world mark of 1:57.98 in the 800m and Ian Weakly did likewise with his 54.91 400m hurdles as did the Japanese 4×100 team courtesy of a 44.08 clocking.

Mark Symes won the 800m and then also won the 1500m and his 4:17.45 improved his recent UK record by a few tenths of a second.
Another of Britain's top athletes, Darren Scott, won the 200m in 23.63 and was third in the 100m.

M60:
Andrew Ridley, who joined this age group in the summer, won the 800m in 2:09.67 and then took gold in the 1500m ahead of Kenyan Robert Kibet, who is believed to be the 1990 Commonwealth 800m finalist who has a 1:43.66 800m and 3:52.48 mile PB.
Ridley's 1500m time of 4:24.23 just missed the world record but is a British and championships record.
Rob McHarg was third in both races. Ridley also won a silver in the 4x400m relay where Germany won in a world record 3:51.19.
Andy Leach won the 5000m with Ben Reynolds third.
Barrie Marsden was second in the 100m hurdles and Britain also took silver medals in the 4x100m relay.

Karen Brooks gained a 800m and 1500m double gold, while Jenny Reay was a close second in the 5000m.
Carole Filer gained a long jump bronze a position matched by Jeanette Ashton in the heptathlon and Ashton also won a 4x100m bronze.
One of Britain's greatest ever masters, Jane Horder, suffered injury and lost out on her usual hurdles medal and contributing to the relay teams.

W70:
Sarah Roberts proved to be Britain's most successful middle-distance runner in Sweden on the track as she won golds at the 800m, 1500m and 5000m.
Her 5000m time of 20:58.33 was a championships record and only just missed Angela Copson's world and British record by a couple of seconds and remarkably Roberts enters the W75 age group in October.
It is easily her quickest 5000m or 5km time according to her Power of 10 records.
A more established GB medallist over the years, Sue Yeomans, finished second in the pole vault.
Emily McMahon gained a 80m hurdles bronze while many times winner Caroline Powell gained a 400m silver and 200m bronze in some very competitive events.
Yeomans and Powell were in Britain's winning 4×100 team along with Anne Nelson and Caroline Marler.
Canadian Karla Joan del Grande won the 100m in a world record equalling 14.70 but only won by a hundredth of a second from Chile's Sara Montecinos who went on to win the 200m in a world record 30.79 and the 400m in a world record 70.62.

Moira West dominated the sprints taking gold in the 100m (16.04) and 200m (34.23) and she also won a W65 relay medal.

South Africa's Anne Centner set a world record in the 10km walk of 71:55 and then set a record in the 5000m walk of 34:34.50.

Evaun Williams won golds in the shot, discus, hammer, javelin and throws pentathlon. She was headed by five years younger W80 Kirsti Viitanen's 12.60m weight throw but that was in the combined W80 plus event and Williams still remarkably won her sixth gold in a world record 11.97m to go with her world records in the shot, discus and javelin.
Kathleen Stewart won 200m gold by almost 20 seconds in a championships record 41.83 and then smashed the world record with a 99.24 400m.
Dot Fraser finished third in the 200m behind Stewart and also won a 100m bronze.
Brazil's Sumiko Imoto set a world record 25.27 in the hurdles.

WORLD MASTERS ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS – HALF MARATHON, Gothenburg, Sweden, August 24
Ellie Stevens, who won on the track at 5000m, won the overall women’s race here on a tough course in 78:23 to take W40 gold.
She also led the W40s to team gold.
Lisa Finlay won W55 gold in 86:00 ahead of Ireland’s multi masters international winner Annette Kealy who had earlier won the 10km.
Britain also won W60 and W70 team gold, Jenny Reay, who was second in the 5000m and 10km (42:12) matched that position here in the W65s.
Sweden’s Mustafa Mohamed won the men’s race overall in 66:45 with Ben Cole missing out on a M35 medal despite finishing fifth overall.
Paul Mingay won a M65 gold for Britain in 82:25 while Steve Watmough won M60 bronze.
There were team silvers for Britain’s M40s, M45s, M60s, M70s, M75s and bronzes for the M65s and W50s and W55s.

Mohamed also won the earlier 10km overall in 30:15 from Kenyan M50 Kenneth Mbura Mungara who set a championships record 30:22 in winning his age group.
GB’s Andrew Leach followed up his 5000m win with M60 gold in 34:58 with Chris Upson third while Peter Giles, who won gold on the track taking M80 gold by over three minutes in 51:06.
Stevens lost out on earlier overall victory in the 10km by a single second to Kenyan W45 Rosaline David but still won W40 gold by a minute with her 35:09.
Mingay was second M65 in 37:20 and Anne Dockery took W75 silver behind Jeannie Rice who headed her in the 800m and 1500m and cross-country.
Bob Bradbury gained M70 silver in 39:45, missing gold by just two seconds.
Ben Robinson won M35 bronze (31:29), John Craig M40 bronze (32:21) and Dot Kesterton W70 bronze (47:33).
